My site will eventually be going to Hemsworth Archives who are in the process
of building a website which will contain much more history and news of the village.
The site can be found at   www.hemsworthpast.org.uk
Please be patient as the site is still in it's early stages.

Hemsworth in history.  These pages give a brief history of the village, with interesting facts, pictures and news.

There are a lot of images on the site, and take a while to load. Please be patient -Thanks

A lot of information has been taken from papers produced by 'Hemsworth Modern School Exlorers' Club' which was founded in 1948 by Mr. Harold Speak, F.R.G.S. who taught at the school, with help from Mr. Frank Snooks, and members of the Club.   Mr. Speak and Mr. Snookes are no longer with us, but Mr. Speaks secretary who lives in Wakefield is pleased that the information is being shared in this way.

Our thanks go to all the pupils for recording events etc., in Hemsworth around that time.

HEMSWORTH, West Yorkshire - is situated almost equal distance from Pontefract, Barnsley and Wakefield on the junction of the A628 (Pontefract/Barnsley) and the A638 (Doncaster/Wakefield) roads.  Along with the neighbouring village of Kinsley it is mentioned in the Doomsday Book which was commissioned in 1085 by William the Conqueror.  The name in the Doomsday book is 'Hamelsworde'  being the ' worth' of a possible Saxon, named Hamel.

The family name of Hemsworth appears in the Domesday Book as Hamelsward, and reading through some of the Hemsworth family trees the first of these appears to be Thorgill Sprakaleg. a Danish Earl who settled here, and was in King Swend Tewkslegs army which invaded England in 1014 AD.

As there are a lot of images on the site, they take a while to load, please be patient - Thanks
